Good Things are Happening in Newark Schools
Alameda County Student Transit Pass Pilot Program
Great news! NUSD secondary students will be eligible for FREE AC Transit and BART service in 2018-19! Associate Superintendent of Educational Services Lety Salinas and Coordinator of Pupil Services Bill Whitton met with a team of school leaders and representatives from the Alameda County Transportation Commission this week to coordinate NUSD’s participation in the pilot Student Transit Pass Program (STPP) in Alameda County funded by Measure BB.
The Commission-adopted goals of the STPP are: reduce barriers to transportation access to and from schools, improve transportation options for Alameda County’s middle and high school students, build support for transit in Alameda County, and create a basis for a countywide student transit pass program.
Avanzando Excellence and Innovation Achievement Awards
In Spanish, Avanzando means to progress, move forward or simply, advance. In Newark, it means support. Avanzando-Newark is a non-profit organization that strives to support Latino youth, their families and the community.
Established in 2009, the non-profit was created by a group of friends who felt that the Latino community needed assistance when it came to supporting students to succeed. Avanzando’s fourth annual Excellence and Innovation Achievement Awards were presented on Wednesday, April 25th. It was my honor to present the Newark Rotary $1,000 scholarship to Ms. Kamilah Arteaga.
In addition to the scholarships awarded, Newark Memorial High School 11th graders, as well as a certificated and classified employee from each school, were honored for their achievements and service. Each was presented with certificates from Congressman Ro Khanna, Senator Bob Wieckowski, Assemblymember Kansen Chu, and Supervisor Richard Valle.
